Playback controls ▶️
Listening practice is ultimately a battle of “how much you hear, and how often.” RedKiwi has lots of repeat / speed options to help.
🎚️ Playback speed
Section titled “🎚️ Playback speed”Available speeds
Section titled “Available speeds”0.5x / 0.75x / 1.0x / 1.25x — four steps total.
When to use which
Section titled “When to use which”| Speed | Best for |
|---|---|
| 0.5x | Very fast pronunciation or a hard sentence where you don’t want to miss a single word |
| 0.75x | Working through a video for the first time at a manageable pace |
| 1.0x | Native speed — default, also good for reviewing |
| 1.25x | Stepping it up on a video you already know |
Where to set it
Section titled “Where to set it”Use the Playback speed control at the bottom of the video player. Your last setting is remembered even after restarting the app.
🔁 Replay overlay
Section titled “🔁 Replay overlay”When the video pauses (paused or finished), an overlay appears on screen. The buttons that show depend on the situation.
- Replay expression — replay the sentence you’re currently studying from the beginning.
- Appears alone if you tap the screen while playback is paused mid-sentence.
- Also appears together with the next button after you finish the last sentence’s puzzle.
- Replay from the start — replay the whole video from the very first sentence.
- Appears once the video has played all the way to the end.
After completing the last sentence’s puzzle, both buttons show together so you can pick what to replay (the current sentence vs. the whole video).
♾️ The two infinite-loop toggles
Section titled “♾️ The two infinite-loop toggles”Depending on the stage you’re in, there are two different loop toggles. They live in different places and loop different things.
1. Sentence loop (training stage)
Section titled “1. Sentence loop (training stage)”In the training stage, look at the bottom control bar under the video for the ♾️ icon. The buttons go: previous / loop / replay / speed / next.
- What it loops: the single sentence you’re studying
- Where it appears: Train (TRAIN), single-sentence study, Mistake Review
- How it behaves: while ON, that sentence keeps replaying so your ears can adjust to the same words and intonation
- Persistence: stays on across videos
2. Whole-video loop (pre-watch / review stages)
Section titled “2. Whole-video loop (pre-watch / review stages)”In the pre-watch (when enabled) or review stage, the ♾️ button shows in the floating area on the right of the video.
- What it loops: the entire video
- Where it appears: pre-watch / review (not in training)
- How it behaves: while ON, when the video ends → it auto-restarts from the beginning
- Note: the pre-watch stage itself is optional → you have to enable it in Learning Settings before this button shows up.
“Listen again on loop — Can’t hear a particular word or expression? Tap this button to hear the sentence repeatedly.”
How to choose between them
Section titled “How to choose between them”| Situation | Pick this |
|---|---|
| Training, can’t catch a sentence and want to keep listening | Sentence loop (bottom bar) |
| Want to soak in the overall vibe / pronunciation of the video | Whole-video loop (right floating) |
| Building a shadowing rhythm on a single expression | Sentence loop |
| Leave the video looping on screen as background exposure | Whole-video loop |
🔇 Subtitles / translation
Section titled “🔇 Subtitles / translation”- English subtitles: shown by default
- Translation: auto-translated into your language (Korean supported)
- Show / hide translation button to toggle
Korean / Japanese / English translations are written by humans, but some other languages may be machine-translated. In those cases the app shows the message: “This video’s translations are currently being provided through machine translation.”
- Don’t mix up the two loops — training uses the bottom bar’s sentence loop, pre-watch / review use the right floating whole-video loop.
- Speed is sticky — set 0.8x once, and the next video starts at 0.8x.
- The point of looping is “internalizing the audio” — not memorizing answers, but adapting your ears to the same pronunciation patterns.
- Looping needs the screen on — RedKiwi doesn’t support background playback. Turn the screen off and playback stops.
